Memento
The Rooster Gallery kindly invites you to the exhibition “Memento” by the painter Eglė Karpavičiūtė, which will be open from November 8 to 26. in the gallery space (Šv. Brunono Bonifaco st. 12, Vilnius). The opening of the exhibition will take place on November 8, at 7 p.m.
In the works displayed in the exhibition, Karpavičiūtė archives her memories. Like postcards or a scrapbook, the exhibition brings together a collection of images of global and personal events, in which both the reflections of world affairs and the personal experiences of the artist resonate. By transforming reflections of current events in the media, images circulating in culture and sharing fragments of personal experiences, the painter explores the boundaries of public and private, universal and personal. She is interested in the moment when motifs from personal life that have been living in the mind for a long time, transferred to canvases and exhibited in public, become part of the memory of those who have seen the paintings. By supplementing real situations with fictitious elements and thus manipulating memory, Karpavičiūtė questions the distinction between fact and illusion and repeatedly explores the relationship between painting and reality. At the same time, the artist observes and captures cultural time and its changes, talks about the contemporary specifics of art presentation and consumption habits, the identity of the painter, the artist, the role of the viewer, their (and her own) faith and doubts about the painting.
The exhibition is part of a diptych of exhibitions organized to mark the collaboration between The Rooster Gallery and the artists it represents and the Young Painter Prize (YPP) competition. The gallery has been actively working in the field of young painting since its inception, and the artists represented by the gallery have repeatedly become YPP finalists and winners. The gallery contributes to this year’s 15th YPP competition by establishing the special prize The Rooster Gallery Open for the third time and organizing the accompanying personal exhibitions of previous YPP laureates – Andrius Zakarauskas (winner of the first YPP competition in 2009) and Eglė Karpavičiūtė (YPP 2012 audience prize winner).
